Starting your career may seem a long way off, but
building the foundations for your career starts now. The more you get involved
at university, the more you’ll benefit – we’re here to help you find out how to
have fun and fill your CV at the same time. You don't need to set aside an hour
each day to research career routes, or finely craft a CV following the ancient
paper art of origami. Your first year is a unique learning experience... inside
and outside the lecture theatre! It’s possibly the most frustrating thing
in the world. You finish uni, decide on a job that you really like, apply and
then get rejected because everyone has more experience than you. For some
careers, you really do need to start thinking early.
It’s never too early to pay a visit to your
friendly university careers service. It’s chock-full of handy information about
all kinds of careers-related stuff you can do outside the lecture
theatre. Some people worry about their A Level/GNVQ/Higher results and
believe that graduate employers won't even consider you unless you have at
least 10,000 UCAS points. Hopefully, this snippet of information will help ease
those fears. Like almost anything in life, graduate job-hunting seems to have
its own set of words and abbreviations. But with this handy glossary, you'll be
able to speak recruiters' language...

Why do need a Powerful Resume- Building a powerful resume is
asking to build a personal brand. A good Cv is like a positioning tool to
right-position and promote your personal brand. It's the first touch point with
your prospective recruiter’s and hence needs to be handled smartly and with
great degree of care. It helps you gee an edge in a highly competitive and
crowded selection process and can help for right career changes or up-word
movements. Last but not the least, a smart CV will create a favorable mental
predisposition with your interview panel and allow the interview discussion to
be steered in the direction you want it to go.
This,
to me, is very critical for interviewers and interviewees alike, as too much
time is wasted in trying to find faults/gaps, interrogate or indulging in a
surface level show of one's knowledge and capabilities. It's vital that the
words used in your CV really make the reader want to meet you and invite you to
that all-important interview. Your CV is your sales document to a
recruiter/employer and if it fails to sell you then it will probably end up in
the bin and hence no interview. Having said that let me share a balancing
perspective. Your personal brand strategy and criticality of building a good CV
depends on the demand - supply situation as well.
TIPS FOR INTERVIW Traditional Questions /
Behavioral Questions- Tell us about yourself. In my humble opinion, the most
overused and overworked, and unfortunately the most likely first question
in any interview. This question can be manifested in any form. As there is no
right or wrong answer to this, this is an open-ended question, most often used
by inexperienced interviewers. However, if this question does come up (and you
should assume that it will), then stick to answering strictly in business
terms; NEVER volunteer personal information. Why do
you want to join us? This is another
question belonging to the same category as the earlier one but usually follows
it. As such, it is routinely predictable and you should have your answer ready.
You need to list the benefits of your joining them from both points of view
(the employer's first, then yours). How would you
describe yourself? Adopt a realistic approach towards this question and
use adjectives like 'honest', 'hard working', etc., instead of the
overused/ambiguous answers like 'courageous' or 'results-oriented'.
